Went to see Robin Trower last night - no VM in sight!!!

Postby WhoAreYou » 06 Aug 2009, 07:20

Hi all,

Before I begin let me say the support act last night was a fantastic young British blues lass by the name of Joanne Shaw Taylor. She was superb. Very accomplished. Check out her MySpace site, and if she comes near your town go and see her. Her album is called White Sugar and it's very good.

Me and a mate went to see Robin Trower, Jack Bruce and Gary Husband (Level 42) last night. Maybe it's because he was playing the collaboration material, but there was no Vintage Modern in sight. Instead he played the whole evening through a couple of Cornells (plexi's?). We were both extremely disappointed having both just bought 50W VM Combos. On top of that the gig was dreadful. I'm the first to admit these guys were/are great musicians and legends but it was just DULL. There were a couple of Cream offerings , plus the usual Trower classics, but everything else was crap. I know Jack is getting seriously old now but the guy was reading his lyrics from a sheet! Can anyone tell me if Trower always plays through the neck pickup of his Strat, because it got a little tedious after a while.

Ho hum.

My man,

Trower can find more variety of tones on the neck pickup in an hour than most players can get using all 5 positions on a Strat in a lifetime. Not to be argumentative about it but it sounds like you bought the amp because of Trower and then you're saying he was ho-hum?

I have to admit, I wasn't crazy about the 7 Moons record because Jack's shaky voice after the stroke (God love him for still plugging away) really made me on edge to hear but I can't imagine Robin ever playing just just ho-hum. He has said in interviews though that on 7 Moons, he wanted the focus on that to be on Jack and not so much on him so perhaps that's what happened. Try to see him with just his band and I guarantee you will be blown away by sheer magic.

Also, listen to his new CD What Lies Beneath and there's more magic there even though that was recorded with Cornell amps which are also great sounding amps at least from what I heard on the recordings and I've spoken to Dennis before and he's a great guy, super knowledgeable and his hand built amps with all the best old style components and unique build methods for lowest noise and hum are incredible after reading his site.

I saw Robin this year playing the VMs and he sounded as awesome as ever and will see him again on 9/25/09 so I can't wait!
